Years ago, I was told that it was a great idea to put hedge apples in my crawl space because it was supposed to keep spiders out. It didn't take long (driving on county roads in Porter County) to find a tree loaded with these odd looking orbs.

But the question is, do they actually keep spiders or other fall bugs out? Maybe not so much, according to U of I. And it sounds like you should be smarter than I was and use gloves if you'll be collecting any of these...
